Mash-Up Marriage: What’s It Like Being Married to an American-American?

image

mashupamerican:

Oh, The Mash-Up Marriage. We’ve discussed how complicated it can be to marry someone who isn’t like you culturally at all. But what if you marry pretty much the opposite of a Mash-Up — oh, say, a white blonde lady from Oklahoma — and it turns out your America is very different from her America? How do you share with someone whose family has been in this country for generations, who looks like an “American,” whose parents’ native language is English, what it means to have become an American, like, yesterday?

Campbell Milligan is the co-founder of Monster Children, something that, in my opinion, is so much more than a magazine. It’s a cultural movement. Campbell is a nice guy, sure, but he might be a little insane. Monster Children has the audacity, in this day and age, to create original stories and produce photographs and spend quality time working them into a tangible medium.

I asked him, what makes a good magazine? The answer may shock you.

Since Parenthood premieres tonight, I thought we could spotlight our photo essay with actress Erika Christensen, aka Julia Braverman Graham.

1. Erika is an avid cyclist. Using the word “avid” is probably an understatement. Her bike was the first thing she wanted photographed.
2. Her favorite tote is this Rapha shoulder bag.
3.
She started collecting Super 8s, so be on the lookout for a fun film project in the future.
4.
A gifted porcelain tea cup from her grandmother.

While in Libya, Michael was hit on two separate occasions. “I lost almost half the blood in my body, needed two transfusions with shrapnel nearly piercing a lung and a major artery in my arm.” He was also kidnapped in Benghazi, saying of the ordeal, “These experiences made me question if what I was doing was meaningful enough for myself to continue doing it. Eventually I discovered yes, it is, but only when listening to myself.”

Hey nerds, another installment of Inventory is up today. We shot this one while we were in NYC over the holiday and features the talented fashion designer Rachel Antonoff. Give it a read if you get a moment, if you don’t have a minute, I hate you. http://t.co/y65uWDFd

"Molly McAleer. Wow. Where do I begin? I consider myself lucky to have had a chance to look into her life for a moment. She is one of the most incredible and intriguing people I have ever met. However, she isn’t the type of person that enjoys being put atop a pedestal and cheered. The idea of this interview absolutely makes her uncomfortable, and out of pure respect to her and our friendship, I will stop prattling about her greatness. I will say, however, this mysterious creative genius is a game changer."
